Expressionist Painter
I am an expressionist painter, and nature is the starting point and main inspiration for my creative journey. I recall places I have experienced and others I imagine as the work forms, capturing the essence of places, with free flowing acrylic inks. The inks’ movement seems random, and yet my eye and emotional response to what I see, consciously guides these marks. Such interest in this medium, has further developed my interest in texture: experimenting with plaster, clay, gesso, salt, sand and anything that adds to the sense of place and the vitality of the image. The paintings I create can surprise me. respond more to the mediums and materials I am using, allowing my fingers and brushes to manipulate the surface and influence my results.
Painting for me is like finding that emotional response that reverberates within me and I try to encapsulate these feelings in the various materials that live on the canvas or panel. Painting in layers, I add paint and scrape away or use masking tape to reveal areas; it’s like leaving footprints of memories and moments. Elements from landscapes I depict; stone, plants, water, sky, trees and earth, are surrounded by negative space, adding a level of depth and hinting on more, something bigger than what is on the canvas or board; a world exceeding the boundary.
Most important to me is that my paintings are all unique. The use of texture and the arbitrary play of the inks, makes my work impossible to replicate; no copies, no prints, just one. How refreshing and unique in today’s world of AI and constant reproductions of adorned images.
