We Move Slowly in the Mornings

We Move Slowly in the Mornings’ explores domestic space as a site for transition at a time of intense change, acting as an extension of anxious routine, disrupted by letting go of youth and acceptance of growth. In its final form, this project is a two-part publication that initially evaluates space in relation to coping before moving to explore the body as a vessel for adjustment, evaluating the marks we make on ourselves in response to external factors. It uses a combination of intimate writings, analogue processes and installation to evaluate inner turmoil, grounded by intense feeling. Through soft but visceral photographs, raw text and intimate analogue processes such as pinhole photography, cyanotype and luminography, the work is an expression of making sense of things. Alongside diaristic writings, Shepherd wore photosensitive paper in her clothes and on her person as an indirect documentation of time and emotion, recording shifts in light and colour, and constructed experimental publications to record her time. As an outlet for intense emotion and a summary of Shepherd’s practice, the work lives and breathes alongside her difficulty navigating times of change, intense emotion and personal growth.
