On the Surface
Lil Sanderson is a ceramic artist with a passion for heritage craft. Her work often revolves around themes of traditional hand craft, historical design movements and championing the makers that have gone before her. Her pieces are all hand built using traditional methods and techniques such as coiling, slab building and hand modelling. She believes that hand processes strengthen the bond between object and maker which can be felt in her finalised work. She enjoys working with scale as she feels it brings a level of importance to her subject matter, creating an almost monument like feel, paying respect to crafts people of the past.
‘On the Surface’ refers not only to the decorative textural surfaces of these pieces, but also to the generations of skill, technique and learning that hides just beneath. Each surface is a reference to past projects carried out on her MA, each carrying rigorous research into heritage craft, endangered craft processes and overlooked crafts people of history who achieved global design styles through dedicating their lives to perfecting their hand craft processes.
Each piece is made from white stoneware, its natural colour shining through a transparent glaze as an homage to the material. A celebration to hand processes features in each piece with the inclusion of visible scoring, coils and natural texture, inviting the viewer not only to view what is on the surface, but also what may lie beneath.
