Emilia Carter- MA Interiors
I am an interior designer with a background in architecture, interested in creating experimental and immersive spaces that shape how people feel and interact. My work explores light, colour, material as design tools, using them to create sensory experiences and evocative environments.
My practice is driven by experimentation, curiosity and a research-led, iterative design process. I work across photography, sketching, model making, prototyping and both physical and digital experimentation to test ideas and understand how spaces can be experienced atmospherically. I am particularly drawn to spaces that feel participatory, creating moments of connection, interaction and discovery.
This approach is central to my MA project, Ritual Atmospheres, which explores how interior design can reinterpret traditional rituals for contemporary life. The project investigates how light, colour, sound, material and interactive elements can shape atmosphere and encourage shared experience, bringing together research into ritual and human behaviour with immersive spatial experimentation.
The project is organised around four contemporary ritual spaces:
Cleansing draws on sound baths and cleansing rituals, using pools with integrated speakers to transmit therapeutic sound frequencies through the water, creating an experience centred on restoration and renewal.
Meditating creates a secular space for contemplation and reflection inspired by the reflective lighting of stained glass with flexible zones and furniture to encourage different forms of reflection.
Feasting draws upon the tradition of gathering, sharing, and eating around a fire. A central illuminated table acts as a contemporary hearth, encouraging connection and conversation.
Dancing creates a space for collective movement, using responsive lighting that changes with occupancy and activity so the atmosphere is shaped by the people within it.
Together, the four spaces consider how familiar human behaviours can be reinterpreted through contemporary interior design to create environments that feel meaningful, memorable and capable of bringing people together.
